The walls of the exhibition hall are lined with colourful paintings and carefully crafted handmade pieces.  As visitors pause to engage with each work, they are met by the creators themselves. In this space, individuals with Down syndrome take the lead, presenting their own creations and sharing their stories.

In Adıyaman, where the traces of the February 6 earthquakes are still felt, a community has been at work for years. Adıyaman Down Syndrome Children's Group brings together volunteer teachers, parents, and supporters, united by a shared commitment to the social inclusion of individuals with Down syndrome.

Our Locally Led Empowerment Program, run in partnership with Diakonie Katastrophenhilfe (DKH), is built on this very foundation. Five months ago, we joined forces with the Adıyaman Down Syndrome Children’s Group—a community that best understands its own needs and holds the power to create its own solutions. We simply stepped in to provide the support they needed to take that next big step.

Bringing Vision to Light

Throughout the process, community was both designer and the implementer of their project. With micro-grant support from Support to Life, they organised workshops in ebru (marbling art), wood painting, drawing, upcycling, and jewellery design. At every stage, individuals with Down syndrome took part as active participants.

Before the workshops began, the group also received Child Safeguarding Training. The process concluded after five months with an exhibition, making visible the effort invested over the course of the project.

A community member and mother of a child with Down syndrome summed up the five months: “In these activities, we found a way to relieve stress while spending quality time with our children. When they are well, we are well.”

Empowerment extends beyond individuals and it reaches everyone around them. The project may have concluded, but the community's momentum continues. They are already moving forward with plans to establish a psychosocial support group in partnership with Support to Life.

Locally led change doesn't fit between a project's start and end dates. It is woven into the memory, the capacity, and the determination of communities.
